FAQs

What makes BOB Kids a Mineral Sunscreen?

BOB Kids uses zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as its active ingredients, rather than chemical actives like oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene, some of which have been identified as threats to coral reef health, and none of which are generally safe and effective (GRASE) by the FDA. Both mineral actives, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are GRASE. These minerals offer broad sunscreen protection when used as directed and provide some of the safest sun protection available. Unlike chemical sunscreen actives, which work by being absorbed into the skin, BOB Kids features minerals which sit on top of the skin and reflect the sun’s rays away from your body. Since it is not absorbed into the skin, BOB Kids is less likely to irritate the skin, making it ideal for children.

Can all Kids wear BOB Kids?

BOB Kids can safely be applied to children 6 months of age and older. As a matter of fact, many parents have found that BOB Kids is easier to use on kids than many leading lotions, sprays or sticks. For children under 6 months, please check with your doctor before applying any sunscreen.

Can my child apply BOB Kids themselves?

Brush On Block recommends that adults apply sunscreen to children under 6 years of age. Adult supervision is recommended for children over 6 years of age until the child has learned to apply their own sunscreen, including covering all areas of exposed skin, and to apply a generous amount. To know that you are applying enough sunscreen, we have found that singing two verses of the popular “Baby Shark” song takes about 15 seconds, the amount of time we recommend buffing your sunscreen on each small area (half the face, one arm, etc) of the body.

Will my child look like they are wearing makeup?

No. Bob Kids was formulated to go on translucent on monst skin tones, from very light to very dark.

What are the benefits of the botanical ingredients in BOB Kids?

Green Tea Leaf Extract is a natural antioxidant. Safflower Seed Oil and Jojoba Seed Oil moisturize and protect the skin. Bisabolol and Chamomile Extract help prevent skin inflammation and irritation. Together these botanicals work to enrich, soothe and replenish exposed skin.

Has BOB Kids been tested on animals?
No! Brush On Block is certified Vegan and compliant with PETA's Global Animal Test Policy. That means that we don't test our finished products on animals, but also that none of our raw ingredient suppliers use animal testing. We are proudly cruelty-free!

Is BOB Kids suitable for vegans?

Yes! None of our products contain any animal-derived ingredients, and we are certified vegan by Peta. Our brush is made of synthetic hairs and is very gentle on the skin.

How often do I need to reapply BOB Kids?

All sunscreens need to be reapplied every 2 hours. BOB Kids is both water and sweat resistant and retains SPF 30 protection after 80 minutes of water activity or sweating. After 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, or immediately after towel-drying, BOB Kids needs to be reapplied.

Will BOB Kids irritate my skin like some other sunscreens do?

Since BOB Kids is not absorbed into the skin and sits on the skin surface, it is less likely to cause skin irritation. It is ideal for a child’s delicate skin.

Can I use BOB Kids on my child’s body?

While BOB Kids was designed to provide quick and easy sun protection for the face, neck, arms and hands, it can be used on all body parts that are exposed to the sun or that require fast and easy sun protection.

Is it safe around my eyes?

While BOB Kids should not be placed in the eyes, there is little risk of the product running or dripping into the eye area. To apply to smaller areas around the eyes and nose, slide the plastic brush sleeve halfway up for more precise application. BOB Kids can be lightly dusted around the eye area and over closed lids.

Does BOB Kids contain:

Oxybenzone – No
Octinoxate – No
Parabens – No
PABA – No
Phthlates – No
Gluten – No
Homosalate – No
Avobenzone – No
Octycrylene – No
Animal By-products – No
Titanium Dioxide – Yes
Zinc Oxide – Yes

Why doesn’t my sunscreen have an expiration date?

Every sunscreen formula undergoes ongoing stability testing so that consumers know at what point the product begins to become less effective. After three years of stability testing with no drop in efficacy, the FDA allows formulas to remove the expiration date from the products. Brush On Block has reached that standard on many of our products, and so they are not required to carry an expiration date. You may still find an expiration date on some products because some jurisdictions do require them.

The FDA advises that you use up any sunscreen without an expiration date within 3 years of opening it, but since BOB Kids is made to wear every day, that won’t be an issue!

Where is BOB Kids made?

Our sunscreen powder is manufactured in an FDA-inspected facility in the US.

Is it ok to use BOB Kids in in regions that have banned some sunscreens?

Yes! Brush On Block contains none of the sunscreen ingredients that have been banned to protect ocean life. Additionally, the products contain non nano-sized particles.

What rays does BOB Kids protect my child from?

BOB Kids Mineral Powder Sunscreen provides broad spectrum protection, meaning it protects the skin from UV rays, both UVA (that cause photo-aging) and UVB (the ones that cause sunburn) rays. Additionally, it protects from damage from Blue Light (HEV Light, High Energy Visible Light), which comes from both screens and from the sun and from IR-A (Infrared-A) light.

How long should my BOB Kids Mineral Powder Sunscreen last?

The product in your BOB Kids brush should last approximately three months with daily use on face, neck, arms and hands. During the summer, or when your child may be swimming or sweating, you will need to reapply, so your powder may last only two months.

Is BOB Kids refillable?

To avoid accidental spills by children, BOB Kids is not refillable.

Can I wash the brush?

We recommend that you clean, but do not wash your brush with water (as water may drip down the spout and cause the brush to clog). To clean your brush, make sure it is in the “closed” position. Run the bristles over a paper towel sprayed with brush cleaner, a damp microfiber cloth or even a baby-wipe. Then allow the bristles to fully dry with the cap off. Should your brush really need to be washed, it can be done, if you take care to keep the brush horizontal so that no water can enter the spout at the center of the bristles.

Who is BOB?

While we wish that we had a really fun answer for this, BOB is simply short for Brush On Block®!
