Frequently Asked Questions
The most important part of a sunscreen ingredient list is the “active ingredients” section. This lists the ingredients that are doing the hard work of shielding your skin from the sun. Active ingredients can be broken into two categories, “chemical” and “mineral.” Mineral sunscreens use the active ingredients of Titanium Dioxide and/or Zinc Oxide to protect your skin from UV rays. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are the only two sunscreen actives that the FDA recognizes as “generally safe and effective,” or “GRASE.”
Yes! Mineral sunscreens are those that use Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide as the active ingredients, as opposed to chemical active ingredients like Avobenzone, Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Homosalate, and others. Founder Andrea Wetsel discovered mineral sunscreen actives when one of her young daughters had a bad reaction to a chemical sunscreen active. Brush On Block only uses mineral sunscreen actives!
No! Brush On Block is certified Vegan and compliant with PETA's Global Animal Test Policy. That means that we don't test our finished product on animals, but also that none of our raw ingredient suppliers use animal testing. We are proudly cruelty-free!
Yes! None of our products contain any animal-derived ingredients, and we are certified vegan by Peta.
All sunscreens need to be reapplied every 2 hours when you are outdoors or exposed to UV rays. If you are in and out of water, refer to the individual product FAQs or box for reapplication times.
Since mineral sunscreens like Brush On Block products are not absorbed into the skin and stay on the skin's surface, they are less likely to cause skin irritation or breakouts. In most cases, irritation is caused by chemical sunscreen actives, which must be absorbed into the skin to be effective.
Yes! Some of our products are designed for children, but all of our products can be safely applied to children aged six months or older. No sunscreen should be applied to children younger than six months without first speaking with a doctor.
Brush On Block products were primarily designed to provide quick and easy sun protection for the face, neck, arms and hands, but they can it be used on all body parts that are exposed to the sun or that require fast and easy sun protection.
Yes! Mineral sunscreen actives are gentler on your skin than most chemical options, making them perfect for sensitive types. Zinc oxide is a well-known skin soother too! Plus, we've packed our products with skin-loving ingredients like bisabolol, chamomile, squalane, jojoba seed oil and hyaluronic acid – all known for their calming properties. Your sensitive skin will thank you!
All Brush On Block sunscreens are manufactured in the USA in FDA-inspected labs. What does Broad Spectrum mean?Product labels that include the term “broad spectrum” protect from both UVA and UVB rays. This means that they not only protect you from getting a sunburn (caused by UVB rays), but also protect your skin from the visible signs of aging caused by UVA rays.
Here's a little secret: no sunscreen is truly waterproof (the FDA doesn't even allow companies to make that claim anymore). However, many of our Brush On Block sunscreens are water- and sweat-resistant for up to 80 minutes – that's the highest level of water resistance available! Just remember to reapply after towel drying for continued protection.
