6 Simple Steps to Shore up Your Summer Skin Care Routine

Between baking on the beach and catching rays from the outfield bleachers, our skin can take a serious beating come summer. Sure, we all know about the importance of using sunscreen, but maintaining healthy skin throughout the summer requires a different kind of attention than it does during the rest of the year.

Summer skin care can be tedious, but believe us—your skin will definitely be thanking you in ten years or so for the extra time you spend exfoliating and moisturizing now. So to help you keep your skin radiant and youthful for years to come, we’ll break down why summer skin care is unique, and offer a few simple tips to shore up your summer skin care routine.

Mask it. Extra warm temperatures mean that the skin loses water and excretes oil in a flash, leading to redness and blemishes of all sorts.  So depending on your skin type, you’ll either want to use a clay mask or a hydrating mask about 3 times a week.

Exfoliate. Instead of those dry winter winds, summer calls the sun and its sizzling UV rays to center stage, torching skin cells and leaving flaky patches behind. In order to even out dark spots and help your moisturizer get the job done, you’ll need toexfoliate no more than twice a week. Exfoliating too often can dry the skin out even more, leaving your skin vulnerable to redness and acne.

Give your skin a tone-up. In addition to using a cold water rinse after a warm water rinse, using a toner will help seal up your pores and rehydrate dry skin, keeping your skin moist and less prone to acne. Tone after each time you wash.

Use a moisturizer with SPF. Applying a moisturizer with an SPF of 15 or higher after you wash your face can do wonders for keeping your skin hydrated and protected from the mean old sun. Keep in mind, the SPF of your moisturizer is no replacement for sunscreen.

Sunscreen. Last, but not least, the superstar of summer skin care is none other than sunscreen. Remember, sunscreen takes about 20 minutes to begin working after application, so be sure to apply it at least 30 minutes before you plan on being outside.

If you’re really looking to keep your skin healthy this summer, forget the greasy sunscreen lotions and sprays and go with Brush On Block® instead. This SPF 30 mineral sunscreen powder is super convenient and easy to use, featuring a no-mess brush applicator for complete coverage in a few simple swipes. And Brush On Block goes on translucent, so you can apply it over makeup and protect your skin wherever you go.
