FAQs

What makes Brush On Block® a Mineral Sunscreen?

As a mineral sunscreen, Brush On Block® does not contain harmful chemical ingredients. Brush On Block® contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, both of which are well-known, naturally occurring minerals. Both minerals offer broad-spectrum, SPF 30 sunscreening action when used as directed, and provide some of the safest sun protection available. Unlike chemical sunscreens which work by being absorbed into the skin, Brush On Block® features natural minerals which sit on top of your skin and reflect the sun’s rays away from your body. Since it is not absorbed into the skin, Brush On Block® is less likely to irritate the skin or clog pores, making it ideal for people with acne-prone or sensitive skin.

What Makes Brush On Block Suitable for all skin tones?

Brush On Block was formulated to go on translucent on most skin tones, from very light to very dark. On the darkest skin tones, you may see Brush On Block when you first apply, but wait a moment. As it comes into contact with the natural oils from your skin, it will become nearly invisible.

Is Brush On Block suitable for dry skin types?

Yes! Because our formula contains jojoba and safflower oils, as well as rice lipids, you will not find it drying.

Is Brush On Block suitable for oily or acne-prone skin types?

Yes! Brush On Block is non-comedogenic, and as a dry powder, will help absorb oils as they reach the surface of the skin. It makes a great touch-up powder mid-day with the added bonus of sun protection.

What are the benefits of the botanical ingredients in Brush On Block®?

Green Tea Leaf Extract is a natural antioxidant while Safflower Seed Oil is an emollient that moisturizes and protects the skin. Both Chamomile Extract and Honeysuckle help prevent skin inflammation and irritation. Together these botanicals work to enrich, soothe and replenish your exposed skin.

Has Brush On Block® been tested on animals?

Brush On Block® is a cruelty-free company. We do not test our products on animals.

Is Brush On Block® suitable for vegans?

Brush On Block® is vegan-friendly. Our brush is made of synthetic hairs and the mineral powder contains no animal by-products.

Can I wear Brush On Block® under makeup?

Brush On Block® can be worn under make-up, over make-up (like a finishing powder) or without makeup. It is translucent and since it sits on top of the skin’s surface, there is no risk of smudging, running or greasy residue.

Is Brush On Block® waterproof?

Brush On Block® is both water and sweat resistant and retains SPF 30 protection after 80 minutes of water activity or sweating.

How often do I need to reapply Brush On Block®?

Brush On Block® should be reapplied after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, immediately after towel drying, or at least every 2 hours.

Will Brush On Block® irritate my skin like sunscreen lotions do?

Since Brush On Block® is not absorbed into the skin and sits on top of the skin surface, it is less likely to cause skin irritation, break-outs, or clog pores. It is ideal for both acne-prone and sensitive skin.

Is Brush On Block® safe for children?

Brush On Block® can safely be applied to children 6 months of age and older. As a matter of fact, many parents have found that Brush On Block® is easier to use on kids than many leading lotions and sprays. For children under 6 months, please check with your doctor.

Can I use Brush On Block® on my body?

While Brush On Block® was designed to provide quick and easy sun protection for the face, neck, arms and hands, it can be used on all body parts that are exposed to the sun or that require fast and easy sun protection.

Is it safe around my eyes?

While Brush On Block® should not be placed in the eyes, there is little risk of the product running or dripping into the eye area. To apply to smaller areas around the eyes and nose, slide the plastic brush sleeve halfway up for more precise application. Brush On Block® can be lightly dusted around the eye area and over closed lids.

Does Brush On Block contain:

Oxybenzone – No

Octinoxate – No

Nano-particles – No

Parabens – No

PABA – No

Phthlates – No

Gluten – No

Homosalate – No

Avobenzone – No

Animal By-products – No

Titanium Dioxide – Yes

Zinc Oxide – Yes

Octocrylene – No

Why doesn’t my sunscreen have an expiration date?

Every sunscreen formula undergoes ongoing stability testing so that consumers know at what point the product begins to become less effective. After three years of stability testing with no drop in efficacy, the FDA allows formulas to remove the expiration date from the products. Brush On Block has reached that standard on many of our products, and so they are not required to carry an expiration date. The FDA advises that you use up any sunscreen without an expiration date within 3 years from opening it, but since you should wear your Brush On Block every day, that won’t be an issue!

Is it ok to use Brush On Block in areas that have banned some sunscreens?

Yes! Brush On Block contains none of the sunscreen ingredients that have been banned to protect ocean life. Additionally, we have no nano-sized particles, and are water-resistant for 80 minutes.

What rays does Brush On Block protect me from?

Brush On Block provides broad spectrum protection, meaning it protects the skin from both UVA (that cause photo-aging) and UVB (the ones that burn) rays. Additionally, it protects from damage from Blue Light (HEV Light--High Energy Visible Light, which comes both from screens and from the sun) and IR-A (Infrared-A). \

How long should the original mineral cartridge last?

The minerals in your Brush On Block® brush should last approximately3 months with average use. If you are repeating applications due to swimming or sweating, you may use the product more quickly.

How do I refill my brush?

Brush On Block® was designed to be refillable. To refill your brush simply remove the bottom cartridge by holding the top of the brush with one hand and the bottom of the brush with the other. Twist the bottom cartridge to the left until it unscrews and comes off. Either attach a new refill cartridge or fill the existing cartridge with one of our recyclable eco-refills.

Can I wash my brush?

Yes, and you should!

The Brush On Block® brush head may be cleaned with a brush cleaner, soap or shampoo. We recommend that you clean your brush with brush cleaner regularly and wash the brush when it is time to attach a new refill.

To clean the brush with brush cleaner, spray 2 or 3 sprays on a tissue or paper towel. With the brush in the closed position, wipe the bristles in circles over the wet area, repeating as necessary until no more powder comes off. Gently tissue off residue and let air dry.

To wash with soap or shampoo, remove the powder cartridge and set it aside. Hold brush sideways under running water. Keeping the brush horizontal, apply a small amount of shampoo or gentle soap onto the brush and rub with your fingers. Rinse horizontally under running water. Squeeze the brush to remove excess water. Allow to dry overnight on its side. Once thoroughly dry, screw bottom powder cartridge back on. If your brush does not flow well after washing, locate the white tube in the center of the bristles. Moisture may have made its way into this tube, causing clogging. To clear the clog, stick a straightened paper clip down this tube and move it around to touch all sides of the tube and dislodge any clogs.

My brush used to dispense powder just fine but now it won’t, and I have plenty left, what’s wrong?

Please read the “Can I wash my brush” section.
